Dimmu Borgir es una banda noruega de black metal sinfónico, fundada en 1993 por Ian Kenneth Åkesson (Tjodalv), Stian Thoresen (Shagrath) y Sven Atle Kopperud (Silenoz) en Oslo. Estos dos últimos han sido los únicos miembros estables desde entonces.

La banda ha sido fuertemente criticada por el supuesto "ablandamiento" de su sonido por una gran parte de los aficionados al black metal. "Dimmu Borgir" significa "Ciudades Oscuras" en islandés, también es un conjunto de cuevas formadas por la lava en Islandia que según los noruegos son la entrada al averno infernal.
