Within Temptation es un grupo musical holandés formado en el año 1996 por Sharon den Adel, Robert Westerholt, Michiel Papenhove, Martijn Westerholt, Jeroen van Veen e Ivar de Graaf. Su estilo ha evolucionado desde el doom metal, el metal celta, el metal gótico, entre otros, hasta el metal sinfónico/rock sinfónico como ellos mismos han declarado. Una de las mas grandes bandas en su genero, muy conocidas y queridas (por su primer vocalista). 

Tristania es un grupo de metal gótico procedente de Stavanger, Noruega, formada a finales de 1996 por Morten Veland (guitarra y voz), Einar Moen (teclados) y Kenneth Olsson (batería).

La música de Tristania se suele clasificar como symphonic gothic metal con notables influencias de death/doom metal (sobre todo en los primeros álbumes), debido a su fuerte vínculo con esos géneros y a su legado en la historia del metal gótico. 

El origen del nombre no está claro, pero podría ser una referencia a trist, que significa ‘triste’ o ‘deprimente’ en noruego, o a la flor de Tristania.
